Racism is a Public Health Crisis

Racism is a Public Health Crisis and the Greater Indianapolis NAACP is working with our partners to erase racial inequities and ensure health justice.

  • In 2023, we co-hosted two public forums on historic racial inequities in the healthcare system.

  • We are working with these hospitals to combat cultural insensitivity at all levels

  • We worked with Community Health & IU Health leaders to improve their diversity, equity and inclusion programs

  • We also worked with partners on maternal and child health policy reform

A Conversation with Hospital CEOs

On June 26, 2023, four top Indiana hospital executives spoke about how they are tackling the issue of racism within their healthcare systems. In a united initiative to foster inclusivity and eliminate racial disparities in medical care, key solutions such as improving patient trust, empathy from providers, and diversifying leadership were identified as drivers of change. CEOs and human resource officers for Community Health Network, Eskenazi Health, Franciscan Health, and IU Health said they recognize the urgent need for tangible and measurable change.

Dr. Kelly C. McCants, a cardiologist specializing in heart transplants in Louisville, KY, moderated the forum discussion at Martin University. “If you are in this room, you recognize that racism is a public health crisis, or you wouldn’t have a passion to work together to fix it. The CEOs and the human resource officers have the responsibility and ability to set the stage for how an organization moves,” said McCants.
